Mustard Seed

Bible Matters 573:  Mustard Seed

Twelve times in the bible God tells you that out of the mouth of two or three witnesses, you shall know the truth.  Twelve is the bible number for divine authority.  God’s divine authority is established by the witnesses.  When you look for truth in God’s word, you look for the preponderance of evidence from the testimony of the witnesses, that reinforces the doctrine that God sent to this earth.  Jesus spoke in parables.  God tells you that you need faith, the size of a mustard seed.  Yes, a seed that is only 0.06” or 1.5 mm grows to a tree over 20 feet in height that has many uses.  Four witnesses spoke of the mustard seed, including Matthew, Mark, Luke and Thomas.  Four witnesses, speaking the truth as spoke by Jesus.

Mark 4:31 – It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:

Luke 17:6 – And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Matthew 17:20 – And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Gospel of Thomas – Saying 20: The Parable of the Mustard Seed

The disciples asked Jesus, “Tell us, what can the kingdom of heaven be compared to?”

He said to them, “It can be compared to a mustard seed. Though it’s the smallest of all the seeds, when it falls on tilled soil it makes a plant so large that it shelters the birds of heaven.”

Jesus was dead serious that you should not judge anyone.  Jesus spoke the parable of the mote (speck) and the beam.  With great faith, God wants you to serve him.  With little faith, you’ll want to worry about how someone else is serving God.  This is exactly why church denominations everywhere believe that they are the only ones going to heaven.  Ask yourself this one question:  “How am I serving God and neighbor?”  Don’t worry about the speck in your brother’s eye when you have a beam in your eye!

Matthew 7:3-5 – And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?  Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?  Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Luke 6:42 – Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

Gospel of Thomas – Saying 26: Speck and Beam

Jesus said, “You see the speck that’s in your brother’s eye, but you don’t see the beam in your own eye. When you get the beam out of your own eye, then you’ll be able to see clearly to get the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Before his crucifixion, Jesus celebrated the last supper with his disciples.  When you gather with believers, Jesus said to eat bread for his body and drink wine for his blood in memory of him.  The blood of the New Testament that is shed for the forgiveness of sins.

Matthew 26:26-29 – And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;  For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.  But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

Mark 14:22-25 – And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.  And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.  And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.  Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

Luke 22:19-20 – And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.  Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Pretty simple instructions coming out of the mouth of three witnesses.  You attend any church that teaches doctrine that Jesus brought to the earth and enjoy the bread and wine as a symbol of Jesus’s body and blood.

One witness, John gave different testimony.  Out of the mouth of one witness, John states that eating bread and drinking wine will give you eternal life.  In Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus follows the body and blood instruction with a testimony that he will not drink anymore of the fruit of the vine, until he is with his Father in heaven.  Jesus tells you to “follow me.”  When you follow Jesus, you refrain from the fruit of the vine and drunkenness.

John 6:53-58 – Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.  Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.  For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.  He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.  As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.  This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

The bread or word that Jesus brought to the earth, gives testimony to God’s six-point gospel of love.  When you repent and turn from sin and live God’s gospel of Love and endure to the end, then God will be waiting for you.

Paul was teaching churchianity to the Corinthians.  As far as we know, Paul did not hear Jesus preach on this earth.  Paul adds testimony that if you eat and drink unworthily, you shall be guilty of eternal damnation, which goes beyond the testimony of the witnesses that walked with Jesus.  Again, out of the mouth of one witness, one will not be put to death.

1 Corinthians 11:24-29 – And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.  After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.  For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.  Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.  For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

Celebrating the body and blood of Jesus is in remembrance of God’s word and Jesus’s sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin, so that you can become a child of God.   A child of God, living God’s gospel of Love, which is required for everlasting life.  Eating bread and drinking wine does not give you eternal life.  Paul’s testimony in Corinthians has been used by many as a means to create closed churches.  Paul’s testimony gives church leaders a role as to how to judge one that is unworthy to eat and drink of the bread and wine.  Most of the time, they will use water baptism in that church to align one as being worthy to celebrate the bread and the wine in church.

With great faith, believe that God has plans for you in his kingdom.  You have a great place in his kingdom.  Not by judging others or doing religious acts of man.  Your walk begins by doing the will of God.  You recognize that only God can change your life by serving him and performing good works.  Serving him by living his gospel of Love.  God’s message is clear.   If you love him, then do God’s will and bring forth good fruit, winning souls for the Lord!

Matthew 7:18-21 – A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Proverbs 11:30 – The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

To God be the glory in all you do, Amen..
