Knew No Sin

Bible Matters 505: Knew No Sin

Three New Testament witnesses, Paul, Peter and John have testified that Jesus knew no sin!

2 Corinthians 5:21 – For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 Peter 2:22 – Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

1 John 3:5-11 – And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

As believers in God, you be the judge. Did Jesus knew no sin?

God needed to give the Israelites some direction on how to worship God so he sent them the Ten Commandments.  These commandments were in play when Jesus walked on this earth.

Exodus 20:1-8,12,16-17 – And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:  Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;  And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.  Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.

Through the prophets God warned against drunkenness, wine and strong drink.

Deuteronomy 29:6 – Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 10:9-10 – Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:  And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean.

Numbers 6:1-4 – And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD:  He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried. All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.

Job 12:25 – They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

Psalm 69:12 – They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

Proverbs 20:1 – Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 31:4-5 – It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Isaiah 5:21-23 – Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!  Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:  Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

Isaiah 19:14 – The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggered in his vomit.

Isaiah 24:9 – They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

Isaiah 24:20 – The earth shall reel to and from like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

Jeremiah 48:26 – Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.

Jeremiah 49:12 – For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken;

Proverbs 23:21 – For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty:

Joel 1:5 – Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

Habakkuk 2:15-16 – Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, that put thy bottle to him, and make him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

Jesus drank wine.  In his first miracle he turned water into wine for all to drink.

John 2:10 – And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

Towards the end of his ministry, Jesus said he would drink no more fruit of the vine.

Matthew 26:29 – But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

He told his followers to drink wine in memory of him.

1 Corinthians 11:25-26 – After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.  For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.

God’s seventh commandment was clear, to keep the sabbath holy. Jesus worked and performed many miracles and healed many lost and diseased people on the Sabbath.  To heal them and to grow his heavenly kingdom, all for the glory of God. (See Matthew 12:10-13; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 13:14)

Luke 13:14 – And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

Jesus did not keep the Sabbath holy in the sight of the Pharisees.  Needless to say, the Pharisees objected of Jesus’s behavior.  All four New Testament witnesses gave testimony after testimony of Jesus giving glory to the Father on the Sabbath, by showing acts of love to the things of God.  Not to the things of self, but to the love of others.  (See Mark 3:4; Mark 12:33; John 5:5-9,10,16;John 9:14; Matthew 5:16)

Mark 3:4 – And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.

John 9:14 – And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.

Following Jesus’s resurrection, he told Mary Magdalene not to touch him.

John 20:17 – Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

Shortly thereafter, Jesus told Thomas the touch his scars from the cross.

John 20:27 -] Then saith he to Thomas, reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

Did Jesus walk in darkness when he served wine and to tell you to drink in remembrance of him?

Did Jesus keep the Sabbath holy?

Did Jesus lie to Mary Magdalene or Thomas about touching him?

You be the judge.  Did Jesus knew no sin or was his actions establishing the New Testament doctrine?

God told you to judge no one!  You are to go live your life for the glory of God!

To God be the glory in all you do, Amen.
